CAMBODIA - Angkor Wat - Mother of all Temples

Published in smilesSiem ReapmonumenticonCambodiaAngkor Wat by Julian W.

Rise and shine to a brand new day! I was up at 4.15am to prepare for my sunrise trip to Angkor Wat...Mother of All Temples.

My tuk-tuk driver, Ny Ly, was at the hotel to pick me up at 5am. We whizzed past the sleeping town to our destination which is only about 7km away.

Imagine....Angkor Wat is packed even in the wee hours! There're probably around 200 tourists by the time we're there! I guess nobody wants to miss the sunrise at Angkor...People always say that it is one of the "must-do"things when you come to Siem Reap.

Frankly I must say that the sunrise is not as spectacular as I had imagined. However, its still worth the effort for this morning operation. The early morning is a great time to indulge in the sheer splendour of the complex, allowing your senses to take over. What is really hard to visualise is that some 1000 years ago, the folks back then had actually used stones...and only stones to build Angkor Wat from the ground! The Angkor Complex is a grand palace by itself, and covered with intricate cravings that can be seen everywhere.

However, Angkor Wat is only the beginning of the adventure. On this very day, I also took the opportunity to visit Angkor Thom and the group of temples in the area. All in all, I took around 9 hours for my photographic escapade and I guess I have done enough justice with about 200 shots for today :)

The highlight for tomorrow is Ta Phrom (Temple in the Jungle)..and hopefully, I have enough energy to burst through to sunset!
